History of The Train

The oldest working steam locomotives in the world, the Fairy Queen made its maiden journey in the year The Fairy Queen1855 for the erstwhile East Indian Railway. And rightly so, the Fairy Queen Train today holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest locomotive in regular operation. It used to travel on the Howrah-Raniganj line and later in Bihar till 1908. In July 1997, the Indian Railway restarted its operation as a heritage train from Delhi to Alwar and from there the tourists are taken to world famous Sariksa Wildlife Sanctuary. The Fairy Queen operates on the 2nd and the 4th Saturday of the months of October to March. The Fairy Queen has only one AC chair car coach, which can accommodate a maximum of 50 tourists. There is also an attached pantry car to provide on board catering services to its privileged passengers. As an added attraction, the coach has a beautiful lounge in the front, which provides a scenic sight of the countryside. For your enjoyment numerous cultural programs are organized on the evening of the first day at the Hotel Sariska Palace. The destinations covered by The Fairy Queen are Delhi, Alwar and the famous Tiger Reserve in Sariska. The two-day and one-night package is a beautiful gift for all wildlife lovers and definitely worth enjoying at least once in your lifetime.

History
The Fairy Queen, the oldest working Steam Locomotive in the world, is a 2-2-2WT BG loco built in 1855 by Kitson, Thompson, & Hewitson for the British firm, the East India Railway. It used to travel on the Howrah-Raniganj line (121 miles) and later in Bihar till 1908. For the first time in the year 1895, it was christened as Fairy Queen Historythe fairy queen. Chronology of the Fairy Queen 1855 - the steam locomotive was built and started its operation on Howrah-Raniganj line. 1895 -- Chiristened as 'Fairy Queen'. 1908 -- Halted its operations 1971 - First exhibition in National Rail Museum 1996 - Completely over hauled by ICF (Integral Coach Factory), Perumbur 1997 - Rejuvenated to work on main lines with a chair car and service car with a powerful generator and compressor July 18, 1997 - made its first commercial Trip from Delhi to Alwar January13, 1998 - Certified as the world's oldest working locomotive by the Guinness Book of World Records January25, 1999 - Received National Tourism Award for the most innovative and unique tourism project.

Itinerary Details

Details :

Fairy Queen is the wolrd's oldest rolling locomotive. It started its journey in the year 1855 and ha Fairy Queen Itineraryd been operational till 1908 when due to some reasons its regular operations were halted. In July1997, the Indian Railway restarted its operation as a heritage train from Delhi to Alwar and from there the tourists are taken by a luxury bus to the world famous Sariksa Wildlife Sanctuary.

The itinerary of Fairy Queen includes 1Night/2 Days of a momentous journey. In this period you visit the beautiful city of Alwar, historical monuments of Delhi and the world famous Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. The train leaves Delhi Cantonment Railway station on every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the months of October to March.

STEAM EXPRESS TOUR
Recently, the Fairy Queen Engine has been replaced by another Steam Locomotive- WP 7161,built at Chittranjan Locomotive Workshop in 1965 & easily recognized by it's cone shaped bulging nose ,with a silver star devise painted on it.The train trip has now been renamed as Steam Express Tour & departs every 2nd & 4th Saturday morning from New Delhi to Alwar. You travel in comfort of Air-Conditioned Chair Car Saloon Car hauled by a steam engine & go back 50 years in time for once-in-a lifetime experience.

You are met on arrival at Alwar Railway Station in the afternoon & transferred to Sariska by Deluxe Buses for overnight stay in RTDC Tiger Den Forest Lodge/similar. Enroute brief halt at Siliserh Lake for high tea. Evening enjoy cultural program at Sariska.On Sunday early morning proceed for Jeep /Canter Excursion to Sariska Tiger Reserve, former hunting preserve of Alwar Royalty. The scrub thorn dry deciduous forest is home to Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cats, Striped Hyena, Golden Jackal, herds of deer family, besides plenty of bird species & reptiles.
Later you visit museum in Alwar town, before boarding the Steam Express by noon & arrive back in New Delhi on Sunday evening . Your travel,meals, overnight stay, sightseeing & jungle excursion are included in package cost.

Facilities
The Steam Express has a 60-seater air-conditioned chair car specially designed with a large glass window from where you can have a frontal view of the Locomotive, besides there is a well maintained pantry car for on board catering. As an added attraction, the coach has a beautiful lounge in the front, which provides a scenic view of the countryside. In Sariska you stay in RTDC Tourist Bungalow/similar.
The Steam Express Train Tour is jointly operated by Indian Railways & IRCTC and arrangements in Alwar & Sariska are managed by RTDC.

1. In case of technical problem with Steam Engine, the train is hauled by Diesel/Electric Engine

The Fairy Queen has only two coaches attached to it. One, a specially designed air-conditioned car with fifty comfortable seats on which guests can recline and enjoy the ride from Delhi to Alwar and back. Besides there is a well maintained pantry car for on board catering. The additional attraction on the train is the lounge in the front of the passenger coach. Its large window offers a beautiful view of the Fairy Queen engine as it puffs away and steams across the countryside of Rajasthan on its way to Alwar.

The journey on the Fairy Queen luxury train is a day journey and there is no overnight stay on the train. Passengers stay overnight at the Hotel. For your enjoyment numerous cultural programs are organized on the evening of the first day at the Hotel Sariska Palace.

Your Overnight Stay Ticket Cost Includes:
All meals-Breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea/coffee provided on board or in hotels.

  1. All meals in the hotel are on buffet arrangement.
  2. Breakfast will be served after return from jungle safari at hotel Tiger Den/similar one.
  3. To prevent inconvenience to other group members all guests are requested to adhere to the specified timings.

Train Ticket Booking Rules:

  1. We require Name/Sex/Date Of Birth/Address/Contact Number of all the passengers
  2. Full package cost has to be paid at the time of booking.
  3. Foreign Tourists will be charged as per the prevalent exchange rate

In case of failure of Steam Loco at the moment or enroute,the journey will be completed using Diesel Loco

Indian Railways Cancellation Rules :

  1. There shall be no refund except.
  2. When the train is cancelled for technical reasons by the Railways.
  3. When the tourist is not able to travel on account of unforeseen circumstances.

2. The refund by Indian Railways will be granted as follows :-

In case of (a) above (I) Full refund of the fare less 1% handling charges
In case of (b) above
(I) No refund, if the ticket is cancelled less than 15 days in advance including the date of journey.
(II) 50% refund, if the ticket is cancelled more than 15 days in advance excluding date of journey.
