History of The Train

The Palace on Wheels is counted among the most prestigious trains of the world because the facilities offered onboard are unique and unparalleled and you cannot find the same in any other train of the world.

The Palace on Wheel's history is legendry and vivid. The carriages, which form this train, have Palace on Wheels History a history of their own. The rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India once used the magnificent and luxurious coaches of this train.

After India's Independence in 1947, Indian Railways decided to discontinue the use of these magnificent coaches on account of their gorgeous furnishings and very rich and traditional interiors, as it was not viable to include them in normal passenger trains.

During 1981-82 the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways decided to launch a special heritage tourist train for providing an unforgettable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan and the result was the Palace On Wheels. Powered by a steam engine the train made its inaugural trip on 26th January 1982.

The wide media coverage of the Palace on Wheels, since its launch in 1982 has contributed in its immense popularity all over the world. Television channels such as BBC World, Zee TV, National Geographic, MDR of Germany and many others have covered the train in detail in their programs, which have contributed to enhancing its popularity.

The itinerary of Palace on Wheels includes 7 Nights/8 Days of a royal journey on this luxurious train. In this period you visit many beautiful cities, historical monuments, wildlife sanctuaries and experience an enjoym India Gate, Delhient of the lifetime. The train leaves Delhi on every Wednesday from Delhi cant. Railway station.

Day 01 - Wednesday - Delhi
Your lifetime journey on the Palace on Wheels starts from the Delhi Cant. Railway Station at 17.45 hrs, where the guests are accorded with a warm, traditional welcome. Dinner is served onboard at 20.00 hrs and you are on the way to Jaipur.

Day 02 - Thursday - Jaipur
Arrival: 02.00 hrs. Departure 19.30 hrs
Elephants and a Shehnai recitation greet you at your arrival at the pink city of Jaipur. You have your lunch at Hotel. In Jaipur you visit Hawa Mahal, the Jantar Mantar (the largest observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh), Nahargarh fort, Amber fort and many more places. You return back to Palace on Wheels around 18.30hrs where the dinner awaits you onboard.

Day 03 - Friday - Jaisalmer
Arrival: 08.15 hrs. Departure 23.00 hrs
Jaisalmer is one of the popular tourist destinations of Rajasthan. The city is famous for its golden fort made of yellow sandstones. The Patwon ki haveli and Nathmalji ki haveli are the finest examples of the sculptor's skills. The sand dunes outside Jaisalmer provide you an excellent place for a camel ride. After lunch on board you can enjoy a camel safari in the sand dunes. Dinner on the sand dunes under the moonlit sky is another highlight of your visit. Day 04 - Saturday - Jodhpur
Arrival: 07.00 hrs. Departure 15.30 hrs
Next morning the Palace on Wheels reaches Jodhpur, the second largest city of Rajasthan fortified by a high stonewall with seven gates and several fortresses. The famous tourist spots here include Mehrangarh Fort, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana. You have your lunch at the majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace and return to the Palace on Wheels.

Day 05 - Sunday - Sawai Madhopur
Arrival: 04.00 hrs. Departure: 10.30 Hrs
Sawai Madhopur is famous for Ranthambore National Park, one of the most famous national parks of India. Here you can enjoy a safari ride to explore a variety of wildlife including tigers, chital, deer, monkeys and many more like them. Another not to be missed tourist attraction here is Ranthambore Fort. After that you return to the Palace on Wheels and leave for Chittorgarh.

Arrival Chittorgarh: 15.30 Hrs Udaipur Temple,Palace on Wheels
Chittorgarh is known as the city of bravery and romance. The 7th century Chittorgarh Fort, has witnessed many wars fought over to protect the dignity and respect of the beautiful queen, Padmini. Other attractions here include Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory) and the Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame). After visiting Chittorgarh, you start your journey for Udaipur.

Day 06 -Monday - Udaipur
Arrival: 15.30 hrs
You reach Udaipur, the city of lakes next day and take a tour to the palaces, forts and temples of Udaipur. You also visit the most beautiful sites of Udaipur, the Jag Niwas (Lake Palace) and the Jag Mandir, which appear to rise from the blue waters of Lake Pichola. After that you have lunch at the Lake Palace Hotel.

Day 07 - Tuesday - Bharatpur-Agra Taj Mahal Agra,Palace on Wheels
Arrival: 06.30 hrs. Departure 11.45 hrs
The Palace on Wheels arrives in Bharatpur in the early hours of the day. After breakfast, you are set to visit the world famous Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary also famous as Keoladeo Ghana National Park. You can see here many varieties of birds including the rare migratory birds like Siberian cranes.

Day 07 - Tuesday - Agra
Arrival - 14.30 Hrs
The same day you arrive at Fatehpur Sikri here you can visit a mosque built by the Mughal emperor Akbar, dedicated to Sheikh Salim Chishti, a Muslim Sufi saint. After that you have lunch at a hotel in Agra and visit the wonderful Taj Mahal, constructed by Shah Jahan, as a symbol of love for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Day 08 - Wednesday - Delhi
Arrival - 06.00 hrs
You have your dinner on board get set to return to Delhi. The luxury train arrives at Delhi Cantt Railway station the next morning. You have your breakfast on board the train. And here your unforgettable journey comes to its conclusion.

Luxurious accommodations : palace on Wheels offers you on board royal services. It has 14 Palace on Wheels Facilitiesfully air-conditioned deluxe saloons; each having 4 cabins attached with bath and shower, channel music, intercom, satellite phones, wall to wall carpeting and other amenities.

Restaurants : The Palace on Wheels has two restaurants cum kitchen cars named as the Maharaja and the Maharani offering traditional Rajasthani, Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisine.

Lounge : At the end of each coach is a separate lounge providing passengers a place to relax when they come out of their bedrooms. Here they get an opportunity to interact with each other. The lounge also offers a good collection of books to choose from. Each lounge has been equipped with a color television and a CD player. The lounge also provides you with an exotic view of great Indian countryside during the daytime. All the famous newspapers and journals are available in the lounges.

Bar : A well maintained bar is always open for you to take care of your drinking needs. Palace on Wheels It has a stock of Indian and international brands and a variety of scotch, wines and cocktails.

The Bazaar: The Palace on Wheels also boasts a beautiful gift shop called 'The Bazaar'. Tourists can purchase exotic handicrafts and gift items from the Bazaar.

The other major facilities available on the Palace on Wheels include beauty saloons , luggage collection , mineral water and laundry services (on request). The onboard mailbox facility is also available for posting your mails . In addition, an attendant or ' Khidmatgar ' is always there at your service, to cater all your travel needs.

Many facilities like Internet, ATM facility and E-commerce are being planned for the Palace on wheels , to take care of the very modern requirements of the valued guests of the Palace on Wheels.

The Palace on Wheels has a total of 14 fully air-conditioned deluxe coaches or saloons, 2 restaPalace on Wheels Coachesurants cum kitchen cars, one bar cum lounge and 4 service cars. Kinds of its own in the world, the coaches of the Palace on Wheels are decorated like a beautiful palace. All of them have lavish interiors with beautiful paintings and comfortable furniture, providing you the comforts and splendor of a real palace.

All the coaches of the Palace on Wheels are well equipped with all modern amenities to enhance the pleasure of your journey. Each coach has 4 twin-bedded cabins attached to it. The onboard facilities available in the coaches of the Palace on Wheels include the bath & shower facility, H/C water supply, attached toilets, channel music, intercom, interesting games for children and wall-to-wall carpeting. The Satellite phone service makes it sure that you communicate anywhere in the world from the train. In addition, there is a friendly and smiling attendant or ' Khidmatgar ' on each coach, to cater all your traveling requirements.

Booking Procedure : Palace on Wheels

  • Advice Names/ Nationality/Date of birth of all the passengers with preferred date of journey to process booking.
  • Booking will be confirmed on receipt of MINIMUM 25% of Train Tour Printed Tariff.
  • Full /Balance tour amount must reach us at least 65 days before tour depart with passport details of all the passengers.
  • To issue e-travel documents we require full tour amount with photocopy of passports & Indian Visa.
  • Any booking request made < 65 days, before train tour depart, will be CONFIRMED against receipt of ONE TIME full tour amount.
  • Saloon/cabin names are allotted at time of check-in, at the Railway station with boarding cards.
Payment Options :

Cancellation Rules-Palace on Wheels :
  • The Principal Train Tour operator of Palace On Wheels is RTDC(Tourism dept of Rajasthan Govt) & liability of Companion Journey Pvt Ltd, New Delhi is limited to that of booking agent only
  • Cancellation of booking will be processed only on receipt of written request & cancellation levy will be on full ticket value irrespective of advance paid Or negotiated tariff.
  • If cancellation request is received > 61 days before of tour depart - minimum cancellation fee levy of 20% of total train tour ticket value.
  • Minimum 50% cancellation fee of total tour amount, if request received between 61 to 35 days prior to date of train tour depart.
  • If booking cancelled <35 days before train tour depart - full 100% cancellation fee levy on total train tour tariff value.
  • Request for change in passenger names are governed by cancellation rules.
  • Request for change in journey dates are governed by cancellation rules.
  • No show/ Self curtailment of journey / Refusal to board OR continue with the train tour, for whatsoever reasons, is non refundable.
  • Non receipt of payment as per booking procedure, is be governed by cancellation rules.
  • Request for cancellation, based on changes in tariff, taxes OR tour program are governed by cancellation rules.
  • In case the Guests are not able to board the train tour on time, they will have to make self arrangements for onward journey & booking will be treated as no show.
  • There is no facility to stay back in the train, during city sightseeing tours, since electricity is switched off & requests for refund for same,will not be entertained.
  • Refusal to continue with the train journey & Demand for refund, because of fixed tour schedule & group excursions, is non refundable.
  • Any request for refund of tour advance OR postponement of journey date, due to medical emergency Or close death in family must be addressed to MD of RTDC directly.
  • Onboard Train Tour Manager reserves the right to change/amend the day to day program at short notice, to suit local logistics viz strike, local disturbance OR festivals etc .
  • It is not the responsibility of Companion Journey Pvt Ltd. to apply for Indian Visa on behalf of the guest. Passenger should ensure that they carry valid Visa travel Documents before boarding flight for India.
  • The Palace on Wheels Train Tour is a joint collaboration between Ministry of Railways & State Govt. of Rajasthan (RTDC) & cancellation rules have been accordingly framed by them.

Important :
  • Overseas Guests are advised to pre-purchase tour insurance from country of origin of travel.
  • It is normal for both International/Domestic flights to get delayed & cancelled in North India during winter months of December & January, due to heavy fog conditions.
  • In case of non operation of train tour, because of technical reasons OR limited tourist demand, full refund will be made to guest.
  • In case of refund due to guests , Companion Journey Pvt Ltd will make refund after deducting bank charges & credit card processing fee.
  • Maximum liability of Companion Journey Pvt Ltd Or RTDC OR Indian Railways is limited to that defined under Indian Railways Act.
  • Disputes (if any) are subject to jurisdiction of courts of New Delhi, (India ) only.
